INTRODUCTION

Valentine's day is celebrated across the globe. We use it to celebrate and love our loved ones. However, this year, we can’t go and visit them just for safety. For a long time, this holiday was celebrated so therefore, it became an official holiday.

HISTORY

Valentine's day is a holiday of love. It’s the story of a patron saint. This holiday is both a Christan, and ancient Roman holiday. The Catloholic Church recognizes close to two saints. Those saints were named Valentines or Valentinus a patron saint, Saint Valentine of Terni who was a bishop. There are a lot of legends about who he is. One of them is a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius II that single men (men without a wife/girlfriend) would make better soldiers. So he outlawed marriage and dating for young men. Valentines thought that this decree is unfair and unruly. He continued to have young men have relationships in secret. Once Emperor Claudius II found out about what Valentines had been doing, he decided to behead Valentine. The others insisted that it wasn’t just Valentine who’d been helping them. It was Saint Valentine of Terni, a Bishop. Saint Valentine of Terni was the namesake of the holiday. He too, was beheaded. They were both beheaded on February 14.

Another legend is that Valentine was caught in the act of helping Christans escape out of Roman jail, where they were often beaten and threatened. The story begins as Valentines, being imprisoned, sends the first “valentine” letter to the jailer’s daughter, who had visited him during his imprisonment. As he finished the letter, he signed, “ From your, Valentine”. That is now a common signature for Valentines day, now.

RED, PINK, AND WHITE

The most common colors that you’d see on Valentine’s day cards, chocolates, and flowers, are red, pink and white. Red symbolizes romance and love, roses, but also, it was Venus, the god of romance’s favorite color. Pink is another color because it symbolizes family and friends. White symbolizes purity

CUPID

Cupid, as you may or may not know, is a small boy who goes around shooting love arrows at people. Once he does this, the people that he’d shot the arrow at, fall in love. But what was the real story of Cupid? Cupid was the son of Venus, the god of love and romance. Makes sense, doesn't it? His name in Latin is Amor, meaning love.

Cupid has fallen in love himself, too. Who? He fell in love with Psyche, a human. He met Psyche because his mother, Venus sent him on a task to kill Psyche because everyone praised and loved her. Venus had sent Cupid to kill Psyche because she wanted the same type of love that everyone gave Psyche. So she thought that the only way for her to be the praised one, was to kill Psyche. When Cupid entered Psyche’s room, he fell in love with her. She loved him, too. . . One of the things that Cupid had told Psyche not to do, was not to look at his face. He told her this because if she knew that he was the son of Venus, he’d reject him. But of course, she looked.

AUNNIE'S ART REVIEW

INTRODUCTION

I am writing about Diana and Cupid. Cupid is a god of love which is like Valentine. Most of you guys know what cupid does; he just gets bows and shoots at people to make them fall in love. I think that cupid is invisible because we won’t know if cupid shoots love arrows or it just happens that people who fall in love.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The artist's name is Pompeo Batoni. He was born January 25, 1708 and died February 4, 1787. Pompeo Batoni draws and paints allegorical and mythological pictures. He was one of the best artists of that time. He drew a couple of self portraits. He has 200 portraits in all. Pompeo Batoni first gained fame as a painter of Florida and elaborates mythological allegories.

ABOUT THE ART

The art is named Daina and Cupid. Cupid is so special because he is a god and makes people fall in love with his bow and arrow. Diana's powers are children and childbirth, fertility, chastity, the moon, and wild animals. This was painted in 1761 and this was one of his masterpieces and it is housed at The Met Museum in NY. This art was oil on a canvas. I have never painted oil on a canvas but it looks like it is a lot of work because the picture is very blended and detailed.

If you look closely then you will see mountains and buildings in the background. One of the things I notice is that Cupid and Diana both have a headband on. I think the headband is to represent that they are gods. They might be in a backyard or a park with no people around them because there are trees, plants, rocks, dirt, clouds and in an openair. It seems that Diana has cupid's bow and he wants it back so he is reaching to get it. Two things that I wonder about are why Cupid is with Diana instead of his mom and why Diana has clothes and Cupid is a nude. I hope that one day I will find the answers.

RATE THE ART

I give this art a 5 out of 10 ☆☆☆☆☆ because this art is an art that I wouldn’t like to draw and I would not like to collect it either. I would not want it because I don’t like nudes.

ANIMALS WITH DR. DRAKE

Flamingos

INTRODUCTION

`Hello everyone! Do you know about Flamingos? Why did I ask? Because this week I am writing about Flamingos. I chose these animals because when two Flamingos go together, It looks like a heart and that reminds me about Valentine day!

SPECIES

There are 4 different species of Flamingos. American Flamingo, Greater Flamingo, Chilean Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo. Zoologists thought they were closely related to herons, spoonbills, ibises, and storks. They thought it was in the pelecanidae. But they were wrong. They later found out Flamingos lived in a smaller group of bird called grebes. Flamingo legs are tired when you walk a lot. Well this is why Flamingos only stand on one! Flamingos will let one leg rest while the other the stands. Every 10 seconds-1minute is how long the rest and stand. Flamingos are naturally pink, white and orange. They get these colors from the food they eat. Here is an example: If the flamingo eats a lot of orange food, then it will be orange. That is the same for pink, purple, and green. Baby flamingos are born white. They have a straightened bill. They also have downy feathers. That is why they are the color they are! When Flamingos give birth, the family will lay one leg a season (winter, spering, summer, fall). The female makes a mound-like nest. Then they mate. In about 27-31 days, the eggs hatch. Both male and female take turns sitting on the nest. The flamingo is the national bird of The Bahamas.

FACTS

The Great Flamingo is the largest Flamingo. It is about only 4.4-6.6 lbs. The Lesser Flamingo is about 2.6-6.0 lb. Flamingos can be pink, blue, green, purple, white, and orange. Gray eyes when babies than yellow when adult. They will not attack alive animals, only fish. Flamings were discovered in the 1800 century with a flok. Flamingos are native to Europe, aisa, and africa. They are found in the Florida keys that is a Archipelago. In Chile, the Andes mountains and are getting hunted for their meat and feathers (they use their feathers to make lady hats and sell them).

REVIEW

I will give this animal 10 stars because they are big birds, but are gentle, they can fly, but don’t fly in the zoo and finally because they like protein like me. I would like to study this animal because I love birds and birds can fly. I also like this animal because it is the tallest flying bird! I also like it because it has a wingspan of 3-5 feet long! I am 3 feet too. I will love to live with this animal because it can balance on one leg for 10 seconds-1 minute. This animal is also the national bird of the bahamas. Thats a place in the caribbean. Across the ocean going south is cuba. That is one reason why I like this bird.
