DID YOU KNOW? When the ancient Babylons celebrate New Years’, it was a 12- day celebration.

Around the world, we all celebrate New Years’. Of course, we celebrate it differently New Years but we all celebrate it. Common traditions are:

  1. New Years countdown

  2. Parties

  3. Watching fireworks

Now, I want the New Years’ to come just like the rest of you. In my opinion, I like New Years’ because I like staying up until midnight :D Also because of the countdown. On New Years, I would go to celebrate with my family and do the countdown. But for the last 2 years, I have managed to stay up!

In 45 BC, the tradition of New Year started. This tradition was first celebrated in ancient Babylon. They didn’t have calendars or electricity. So to tell that it was New Years’, there was a full moon after the Vernal Equinox. The vernal equinox is when the sun is above the equator.

New York has one of the most common ways to celebrate New Years. They do the New Years’ Eve ball drop. That ball was made in 1907 to welcome 1908. This idea came upon Adolph Ochs. Although Adolph came up with the idea, the design was made by Artkraft Strauss. The ball is made of wood and iron. Before LED lights came along, they used 100 incandescent lights to “light” up the ball. Get it, light. The ball has been New York's tradition. It is always in the countdowns. The only time that it didn’t drop was during wartime blackouts.

The Ancient Babylons also created New Years’ resolutions. They did that by planting crops, crowning a new king, and praying to god. These are resolutions because if they broke their promises, they would fall into the bad side of god. 45% of people make New Years’ resolutions in the New Year. I am one of the 55% of people who DON’T make resolutions. 25% of the 45 stay committed to their resolution. After just 30 days, 8% of people have completed their goals. These are the most common resolutions:

  1. Exercise more.

  2. Lose weight.

  3. Get organized.

  4. Learn a new skill or hobby.

  5. Live life to the fullest.

  6. Save more money / spend less money.

  7. Quit smoking.

  8. Spend more time with family and friends.

Here are some countries that celebrate New Years:

  • Asia. Asia celebrates New Years’ by doing the lion dance, giving red envelopes, firecrackers, and many other red things for good luck. Red symbolizes fire, luck, and joy. They shoot firecrackers into the air because it means to scare away the bad spirits Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar. This year, Chinese New Year will be on February 12.

  • Europe celebrates New Years’ with live music, concerts, and feasts. At the Church of Saint Sava, Europe celebrates New Years the day that we do.

  • The last country that I will talk about is Mexico. Mexico has big feasts that are similar to Christmas feasts. They have a big dinner with the whole family. The most common dish that is being made is Bacalao ( dried saltfish with tomatoes and olives.)

Aunnie’s art review

DID YOU KNOW? The artist puts oil painting because it give the art more textured

“It is almost New Year, so, What art am I going to write about?? Oh, I know! It is “New Years Paris painting by Olha Darchuk.” Wow, would you look at that, it is so pretty. “

Olha Darchuk was born in the city of Kryvyi Rih. The artist, Olha Darchuk says that art should bring joy to people. She does not use brushes that much. Instead, she uses a pallet knife. A pallet knife is that at the end there is a flat metal and the rest is wood, Olha Darchuk draws all the time! (like everyday)

In this art, there are 4 people and 2 couples. 2 umbrellas, 3 Christmas trees, a lot of street lights, buildings, snow and the eiffel tower. The art’s colors are orange, green, gray/blue, black, red, cream (light tan), light blue and purple. This art was made in 2018 and is pretty recent. I think it is evening because the street lights are on. They are holding umbrellas because it might be snowing or raining. The floor and the eiffel tower are textured.

I give this art 10 stars because it is so colorful, textured and realistic. It is colorful because there are warm colors(red, orange, and yellow) and cold colors(blue, green and purple). I also like it because it is winter and they use warm colors. The christmas trees in the art make me feel like it is christmas and I open my presents and eating yummy food and spending time with my cousins. The snow reminds me when I am in the mountains with my friends and cousins when we play in the snow. Olha Darchuk draws every day like me. I hope one day I will be a great artist like her.

this weeks’ Animal! American

Bison

Family : Bovidae (includes sheep, cattle antelope and goats)

Group live : Found in herds

Happy new year. This week’s animal was supposed to be an ox but happened to be one of the zodiac animals! But I have to do american new year . Zodiac animals are Chinese which is not North america but Asia. So the american bison is for north america. The ox and the american bison are in the same class (the class of a living thing is not like in school, is part of the taxonomy and class is like the family).

The american bison happened to be the largest animal in north america. Being 930 lbs is not a lot of weight for the largest animal in north america. But 2,200 lbs is very heavy. Yup, that’s right, an american bison is 930- 2,200 pounds (422- 998 kg). This animal can grow up to 7- 11.5 (2.1- 3.5 m) ft. male bisons are called BULLS. BULLS can be 6 ft long. Female bisons called COWS. COWS can be 4-5 ft tall.

The Kingdom of american bison is animalia.

The Subfamily is bilateria.

The Infrakingdom is deuterostomia.

The Phylum is chordate.

The Subphylum is vertebrata.

The Infraphylum is Gnathostomata.

The Superclass is tetrapoda.

The Class is mammal.

The Subclass is theria.

The Infraclass is eutheria.

The Order is Artiodactyla.

The Family is bovidae.

The Subfamily is bovinae.

Genus: bison

Species: american bison.

american bison are not nocturnal. But they do sleep standing up. These animals are not the only ones who sleep like that. Cows, moose, rhinos, bison, horse are standing sleeper, too But if these mid- sized mammals are DEEP asleep, they have to sleep laying down. They only sleep standing up so-than if a predator comes, they can run. For horses, when they sleep on the floor, it’s hard for them to get up.

I will give this animal 9 stars because it's a slow animal and slow animals are slow. I like fast animals instead. But I'll give it more than five and like seven because males fight with their head like a pachycephalosaurus.
